It happened at the Koodalmanikyam temple in Kerala's Thrissur district, about 320 kilometres north of state capital Thiruvananthapuram, IANS and PTI news agencies reported. The woman was trampled to death, while the men were chased by the elephant and impaled on one of its tusks, temple sources were quoted as saying. The elephant also caused extensive damage to the temple, police said, while at least three people were severely injured in a stampede as terrified devotees rushed to escape. The elephant was tranquilized by veterinarians and chained after about two hours, police said. It was not clear what provoked the animal, but PTI news agency quoted witnesses as saying they saw a man plucking at the bristles on the jumbo's tail. Captive elephants are widely used in Kerala to move heavy loads, usually in timber yards, and for religious ceremonies. It is estimated that there are more than 700 captive elephants in the state, a large number owned by Hindu temples like Koodalmanikyam.
